A woman who killed her pregnant neighbour and ‘stole’ her baby by performing a C-section on her has been jailed for life.
Brooke Crews admitted carrying out the amateur surgery on Savanna Greywind who was eight-months pregnant.
The 22-year-old’s body was later found wrapped in plastic in a river in Fargo, North Dakota.
On Friday, Crews, 38, told Cass County District Court in North Dakota: ‘I did cut her and then I took her baby out of her.’
The baby, a girl called Haisley Jo, was later found safe and well at the apartment Crews shared with boyfriend William Hoehn, 32.
Prosecutors have not disclosed Savanna’s exact cause of death but police Chief Dave Todd called the killing a ‘cruel and vicious act of depravity’.
Crews was jailed for life on Friday.
Before her sentencing, she told a judge: ‘There is no excuse. There is no rationalization. There is nothing.’
Crews initially claimed the child was her own but eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit murder and lying to law officers.
She confessed to luring Savanna to her apartment and attacking her.
It is believed Savanna was slipping in and out of conciousness while her baby was being cut from her womb.
Her disappearance last summer sparked a widespread search of the local area.
Kayakers eventually found her body wrapped in plastic and dumped in a river, reported the Omaha News Herald.
Hoehn is also charged over the murder and will face trial at a later date.
He has told police he came home on August 19 last year to find Crews cleaning up blood in their bathroom.
