A Shady Cove man faces murder charges after police say he killed his roommate and left her body in the woods.
Shane Ryan Michael Wayman, 21, is charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. He is suspected of killing his roommate, 20-year-old Destiny Anne Finch.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that one of Finch’s family members called police on Monday around 7 p.m. to report that she was missing from her home. Deputies responded to the home and found evidence that someone had been assaulted there. Neither Finch nor Wayman was home, but police learned that Finch and Wayman had a fight earlier in the day. Finch’s fiancé and one other man also lived in the home.
On Monday night several police agencies, the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office began investigating Finch’s disappearance.
On Tuesday morning around 6:15 a.m. Medford police found Wayman walking along Highway 62. They arrested him and soon found his car parked along the highway near the Prospect Ranger Station, police say.
Shortly before noon, police found Finch’s remains in a wooded area near Highway 227 in Douglas County. Police lodged Wayman in the Jackson County Jail. The medical examiner’s office was scheduled to perform an autopsy Wednesday to confirm Finch’s cause and manner of death.
Police are asking anyone who has video footage that might help the investigation to call 541-770-8333.
