The mother of infant twins faces charges of the murder of one and the abuse of the other.
The Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a residence in the 10000 block of Woodlawn Drive on Jan. 31 on a report of a 5-month-old boy having a seizure.
In a medical evaluation of the baby at Bronson Methodist Hospital, doctors noticed suspicious injuries and trauma, Portage Public Safety officials said in a press release. The child died due to his injuries Feb. 13, and an autopsy performed by the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s Office listed injuries of the head and neck as the baby’s cause of death. His death was ruled a homicide.
In an investigation, detectives determined the infant had a twin brother who showed similar injuries and trauma. The sibling was removed from his mother’s custody and was placed into protective care.
The 22-year-old Holland woman was arrested Tuesday, June 19. She faces one count of felony murder and two counts of first-degree child abuse. She is expected to be arraigned in Kalamazoo County District Court.
