Idaho junior guard Mikayla Ferenz has been named the College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the website announced on Monday.
Ferenz, from Walla Walla, averaged 24.0 points per game last week, helping Idaho improve to 6-3 in the Big Sky. The Vandals’ road sweep of Northern Colorado and North Dakota was just the second time a Big Sky team has gone 2-0 on that trip since 2012.
Ferenz opened the week with 33 points in Idaho’s 79-71 win at UNC. It was her fourth 33-point game of the season and her sixth 30-point effort of the year. She shot over 50 percent from the field (52.4) and went 6-of-9 (66.7) from beyond the arc. Ferenz added six rebounds and five assists.
She concluded the week with a historic performance at North Dakota. Ferenz became the first Vandal since 1984 to record a triple-double. She put in 15 points and added career highs in rebounds (13) and assists (10), assisting Idaho to a 78-64 win over the Fighting Hawks. Her triple-double was the second in the Big Sky this season, the first in conference play.
