A 7-year-old Detroit girl whose father had been involved in a suspected drunken driving crash was struck and killed trying to cross I-94 Sunday morning at about the time she was texting police asking for help.
Police said she was “killed instantly.”
The girl’s name has not been released, but Michigan State Police, as part of a series of tweets, said her father is in custody. Her mother has been notified.
The crash investigation prompted police to close I-94 near Detroit Metro Airport for a period of time Sunday morning.
Michigan State Police in the tweets said a female driver had called dispatch because she thought she had hit a pedestrian, but when troopers arrived to the area of eastbound Inkster and I-94, they could not find anyone.
A short time later, state police said troopers learned that Romulus police officers were investigating a crash on eastbound I-94 near Merriman involving a suspected drunk driver. State police said Romulus police had sent word of that crash at about 3:35 a.m.
At some point, authorities determined that the suspected drunk driver in the Romulus police investigation was the girl’s father. Michigan State Police said the girl had been hit by the vehicle troopers were initially investigating. That driver was released.
A Michigan State Police public information officer was expected to be available Sunday afternoon to provide additional information. In the tweets, police called the report on the crash preliminary information that “is subject to change with further investigation.”
