Massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits coast of Peru

The quake struck just off the coast of South America


A tsunami threat has been issued in Peru following a powerful earthquake just off the coast of South America.

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck about 124km south west of the town of Puquio, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Officials in Peru said there is a tsunami alert for areas within a 300km radius of the earthquake.

The west coast of the USA is not expected to be affected by a tsunami.
